Student Services provides support and services to international students and international exchange students through the International Education Office. The International Student Advisor provides information and assistance to students in the areas of immigration (study permits, off-campus work permits, post-graduation employment), medical insurance, ongoing international student advising, and information on living in Vancouver. The International Programs Advisor provides information on our student exchange program and works closely with our incoming and outgoing exchange students (see exchange program). Coming to Emily Carr means an opportunity to meet people and share your culture and ideas with others. The International Office coordinates social events, celebrates International Week each November, and offers welcome receptions in September and January with an orientation to the University specifically for international and exchange students.
An international student living and studying in Canada must possess a valid Study Permit, which is issued by Citizenship and Immigration Canada (CIC). International students may also be eligible to work. Visit the CIC website at cic.gc.ca.
All international students are required to have health insurance in Canada. The International Student Advisor provides information on private health insurance and on the B.C. Medical Services Plan, both of which provide basic medical insurance. An additional extended health plan is provided by the Students’ Union (see Health + Dental Insurance). All international students must enrol in the B.C. Medical plan upon arrival in British Columbia. Applications for B.C. Medical are available online at https://my.gov.bc.ca/msp/application/prepare. There is a three-month waiting/residency period so international students who have recently arrived in Canada must be enrolled in private health insurance plan. It is the student’s responsibility to make sure they are enrolled prior to arriving to Canada. Emily Carr suggests StudentGuard through guard.me. This plan is intended to insure international students before they are eligible to receive coverage under the BC MSP.
